In order to fully explain stigma I think the words below may reflect a deeper understanding than I could draft.Leslie has been an ally to my work for quite some time and we met  online through social media. I hope you enjoy her characterization of stigma.…

Beauty is not just on the outside...

In our society, children feel they need to look a certain way to fit in. In my opinion, that's heartbreaking. Anybody, no matter their race, gender, religion, sexual preference, income are beautiful. People, especially children need to understand that its okay to be who you are. They shouldn't have to hide, or cover up their faces with makeup to look beautiful. Boys shouldn't feel obligated to play football or hockey to…

Bullying? Why Continue?

Bully… What does that word even mean? The definition of a “bully” is a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker. Bullies tend to bully other people because they thrive off the power to feel better about themselves. They go above and beyond to make their “victims” feel worthless, helpless and in some cases alone. If people ban together as a group we can make people more aware of bullying and help stop and possibly change this violent…

chive: My Child is a Bully…Now What?

Much of what is written about bullying focuses on what to do if your child is a victim. Little is written on what to do if your child is actually a bully. When parents find out their child has been bullying others, I have witnessed them initially respond in a variety of different ways: utter shame and guilt, tempered anger, quiet embarrassment or denial and defensiveness.

Neither response is ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ and frankly, I would never want to be in that position.

We want our…

“Letters To My Bully,” A Lesson in Empathy

“Letters To My Bully,” A Lesson in Empathy

By Katherine Prudente, LCAT, RDT

Huffington Post blogger Kergan Edwards-Stout posted an interview with Azaan Kamau, editor of the new anthology,“Letters To My Bully.” Mr. Edwards-Stout wrote the preface to the anthology as well as a letter to his own bully. He was the target of cruel bullying for years after coming out as a gay teen.

After reading Mr. Edwards-Stouts letter, I sat teary-eyed at my desk. Empathy. It was powerful,…

Can We Medicate Away Childhood Bullying?

Hi again!

Summer is almost over, and that means kids will be back in the classroom soon. While childhood bullying doesn't go away during school breaks, it seems we hear more about it in the media during the fall, winter and spring.

My best friend is a Special Ed teacher in the States. In her school district, the kids start back tomorrow. Over the years, she has told me about some of her more difficult students, including a boy, now 16, who has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, ADHD…

Start Where You Are

The other day I picked up a magazine from the grocery store called Yoga for Weight Loss. I can't find a volume or issue number, but it says "display until October 15, 2012" right above the bar code.

I bought it for the poses, as I have signed up for a Yoga class starting this September. While flipping through the pages, I came across an article called 'Start Where You Are' by Carrie Peyton Dahlberg. One or 2 paragraphs really stood out for me, and I wanted to share them here:

"Can…

Surviving a Depression; or Dear Future, I’m ready!

By Annie Jollymore

In 2009, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an error in a statement to Members of Parliament: "We should agree as a world on a monetary and fiscal stimulus that will take the world out of ... depression." According to Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States, “It’s a…

THE BULLY INSIDE ME ! by: *365tolife*

I have tried to out run it my whole life. I have tried drink it gone at times. Heck I even tried to gorge, purge, and binge it gone. Like a junkie waiting for his next fix ,the food would suppress those memories for a short while. Every bully that has ever been brutal to me lives inside me. Just like flashbacks those memories come forth from time to time. That guy that bloodied me with rocks. locker room taunts when you had to get dressed for sports. The guy at the store that told me I should… Continue

Is food our next tobacco?

Sent Nov 29 th

I am trying to inspire a conversation about childhood obesity in Thunder Bay and North Western Ontario. The childhood obesity issue is reaching a crisis point,if it hasn't already. The time for action is now,and functional work plans need to be built and developed, so as to try and address the complex issue.

We have had many programs that focus solely on physical activity and many label our childhood obesity crisis as an activity ,or inactivity crisis.…
