I studied human eating behaviour as a module in my psychology degree.
From the obesity part of this module there is a pretty good case for
environment and a good case for biology also. I think that the personal
accountability thing just shifts blame and guilt onto people and whats
more their reaction to adversity has been to self prescribe. I had been
self prescribing with sweet stuff for ages after the death of my neice
but it would lift me high then drop me like a bag of hot manure. Where
was I? Oh yes!

Our bodies are designed to be economical and fuel efficient and
therefore its no wonder no diet works on its own without excercise!
Once we cut down our bodies intake our body thinks that theres famine
and stores everything and uses little. Thats why we have to trick our
bodies into thinking that we are feeding it the same amount. My most
successful weight watchers diet attempt was when I threw out their
rules. I calculated how much I normally consumed per day (in weight
watchers points) and deleted only 2 points initially. Each time my
weight loss plateaued I would reduce it another 2. The fact is that if
I had of done what they advised, my body would of revolted and started
to store, I would of started plateauing much sooner if that had
happened.

We were built to live on little food. Cave men only got a rabbit per
week or something like that and their bodies lived on that. Now food is
everywhere, its a multi million dollar/pound/euro industry. We are
wired to get excited and head straight for potential food because of
our cave man past in the evolution of the human makeup and thats what
we do. The difference is we arent like the cave man and only having a
feast one day and starving the rest. We have food availability at all
times.

Actually paul I think Im going to copy and paste this into the forum.

Hi Paul,

The only way to make Fast Food and Soda go away is for everyone to stop purchasing them. A good way to get a group of people to stop a behavior is to get individuals to say, "No!" It starts with early adapters and goes on from there. So, I believe that we really do have a personal responsibility to say, "No!" When the opportunity for Fast Food or a Soda comes around, I simply decline. Same thing for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). My wife and I look at the labels. If HFCS is in the product, we don't purchase it.

I see nothing wrong with taxing soda and other "junk" food. Let that money pay for health care.

And I DO NOT and will not ever understand how people allow themselves to become obese. Sure, it can be caused by health issues outside of their control, but let's be honest - most overweight people are not overweight because of a health issue. My own father is 300+ lbs and it's because he eats crap and rarely moves off the sofa. He knows better but does nothing about it. Maybe taxing his favorite snacks will finally provide the incentive he needs to change his eating habits.

This was posted on a site, and you need to look for the blaming and the isolating that is in play.

Wow!

The quote that you found on the internet is incredibly incendiary. The author is not being helpful to anyone. "Personal responsibility" starts with the word "personal" which means that it is your own business. When asked, it is others responsibility to be encouraging and supportive, not condescending.

In terms of a tax on junk food, I have no problem with that and would support such a tax. Currently junk food is subsidized by our tax money, it is certainly not taxed. For example, the high fructose corn syrup and sugar industries are propped up by you and me. This is wrong!

Dear Michael,
I am very happy to have you on our web site and the entire key to this crisis is the conversation. Lets get people talking about the issue and I do hope you share the web site that you are involved with.

Great to have you on board.
