Lifestyle is a well thought out ,if not brilliant term. You see it is a slippery little word that is promoted to death. Add Healthy Active Living and you wrapped up Health Canada's response. The media has feasted on this term and most funding is warped into the model.
I contend that our current model that is funded continues to isolate the individual, and therefore the issue continues to get bamboozled ,confused,manipulated by heavily funded groups. Just try to promote a conversation about obesity and see how far you get.
The CBC has had my story for nearly 3 years, and despite contacting some key players within Health Canada including our Chief Health Officer of Canada , Dr. David Buttler-Jones. My work continues to be well outside the focus of health agencies.
However, thanks to Twitter and countless volunteers the conversation is beginning to get louder and louder. Children are the key with any real obesity conversation. People will shift their beliefs about Fat Lazy Unmotivated Slobs , who cause their own obesity. When children are brought into the equation, the frameworks are dropped just a little ,and then blame gets shifted onto Parents,Schools and Tv and computers . It is when people open up to the idea of talking about obesity creates a small window of change in their beliefs, and it is a start of a conversation.
According to big food children are not active enough. Why does Coke support Particapaction in Canada ? I have contacted the newest obesity group, and I have made myself readily available to them for a discussion. Big Food is pushing Calories in Calories out. In other words foods that are chalked full of empty calories , laced with sugar ,or salt get a free pass. This serves the food industry very well. And it helps to take the focus off of ,or away from connecting food products and childhood obesity.
I continue to work on a model called SHARED ACCOUNTABILITY. I feel we need a community action plan,one based on several key cornerstones.
1 DIGNITY
2 INTEGRITY
3 TRANSPARENCY
4 COMMUNITY MINDED ACTION PLAN
The THIN CRAZY MEDIA and TV WEIGHT LOSS need a reality check,because the messages they promote are completely unhealthy and they are feeding unhealthy food relationships.
Add to the accepted term Biggest Loser , or countless TV ads depicting obese people like fools,slobs,unhealthy,couch potatoes. You get a sense of the landscape facing the obese person. I tend to believe obesity is a very very complex issue ,made simple ,easy and sexy by the media, and their sponsors.
